Weight management has been revolutionised in the last two years. As of early 2025, approximately 1.5 million people in the UK are estimated to be using weight loss injections, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. Most of these users access the medications privately, with a significant proportion purchasing through online providers.
Here, our founder and lead GP, Dr Adam Simon, explains how weight loss injections work, the benefits they can bring, possible side effects, and what patients should expect if they are considering this treatment.
How Weight Loss Injections Work
Weight loss injections use hormones that influence appetite and metabolism. Ozempic and Wegovy contain Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), while Mounjaro contains both GLP-1 and Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP).
These medications slow the rate at which food leaves the stomach, helping patients feel fuller for longer. They also signal to the brain that the body is satisfied, reducing hunger, food cravings, and the “food noise” many people experience.
Can You Lose Weight Without Injections?
It is possible to lose weight without injections, but if it were easy, far fewer people would be overweight or obese. Currently, around 64% of adults in the UK fall into these categories.
Certain foods can naturally stimulate GLP-1, but this effect is generally weaker and less consistent than the response triggered by medication.
Common and Rare Side Effects
Most patients experience some side effects, which are usually mild and manageable.
Common side effects:
- Mild nausea
- Constipation or diarrhoea
- Burping
Less common, but important side effects:
- Pancreatitis (0.2–0.4% of patients)
- Gallbladder problems (0.6%)
- Changes to mood or heart rate
- Thyroid cancer (extremely rare – about 0.00001%)
Why You Should See a Doctor First
While weight loss injections are widely available, patients should always consult a doctor before starting treatment. These medications are not suitable for everyone, and certain health conditions or current medications may prevent their use. A GP consultation ensures safety and suitability.
What to Expect in a Consultation
During the consultation, the GP will:
- Assess whether the medication is suitable
- Explain how it works and potential side effects
- Outline a monitoring and follow-up plan
- Provide guidance to maximise results safely
Maximising Results
Weight loss injections are most effective when combined with healthy lifestyle changes. Patients receive tailored plans to ensure that weight loss is both significant and sustainable.
Coming Off Weight Loss Injections
Stopping treatment is usually straightforward but should always be done under medical guidance. Most plans involve gradually reducing the dose. Many patients worry that hunger or food cravings will return after stopping, but with the right support plan, patients can maintain their weight loss and continue to feel in control.
